Quick to: Overview performances / Soloist / Repertoire / Members / Tourjournaal / Funds
During Ricciotti’s Nieuwe Horizon we pause to consider people who have been forced to leave their country in search of a new place to live. With this spring tour Ricciotti shows that fleeing is not only a topic of our time, but a phenomenon that has occurred worldwide for centuries. For example, the orchestra performs music by Kurt Weill, who had to leave Germany when Hitler came to power. Singer Gloria Estefan, who fled Cuba at a young age, is also on the program. Oud player, singer and composer Nawras Altaky joins as a soloist and has written a composition especially for this tour and the Ricciotti ensemble. He fled Syria and found a new (musical) home here in the Netherlands. Because Ricciotti believes in a welcoming society where refugees can safely build a new future, this tour sheds light on the experiences of these people from around the world and from every era.

Soloist
Oud player, singer and composer Nawras Altaky our soloist during Ricciotti’s Nieuwe Horizon.
Wanneer en waarom ben je begonnen met het maken van muziek?
I actually grew up with music — in Syria it’s always present on the street, in taxis, at celebrations, weddings, and family gatherings. As a child I noticed how music could change the atmosphere when emotions ran high at such gatherings. People would form a circle, sing and dance: everyone became cheerful. I wanted to be able to create that too.
What is it like for you to have been in the Netherlands since 2015?
Nawras means “seagull” in Arabic. I grew up in the mountains, a seven- to eight-hour drive from the sea, and I saw the sea in Syria only once or twice. What I like about the Netherlands is that it matches my energy — there is a lot of water here and I feel connected to the element of water. Here in the Netherlands I can truly be myself in a certain way.
Which artist (living or dead) would you like to have a cup of coffee with, if you could, and why?
I would like to meet two artists who were both singers, oud players, and composers. I would love to get advice and tips on my compositions from Mohammed Abdel Wahab from Egypt and Wadih El Safi from Lebanon. I also think it would be nice to meet Bach. I find what he created divine and to me he is the godfather of composition. I would talk with him about how separate musical elements can exist independently yet work together perfectly — that connection is something valuable not only for music but also for society.
More information about Nawras can be found on his own website.
